Fellowship Details
- A distinguished international committee of academic, corporate and NGO representatives will review fellowship applications.
- There are no citizenship requirements, however, fellows will be matriculated at the Freie Universität Berlin for the duration of the program.
- The fellowship carries a $36,000 stipend for living and all related expenses for the nine-month duration of the program, and an additional $5,000 in travel expenses.
- Research directives of each fellowship influence geographic placement.
- The fellowship consists of three parts, each three months in duration.
Requirements
- Demonstrated scholarly and leadership capabilities in a particular field/discipline related to business, international relations or economics;
- Proven interest in world affairs;
- PhD recipient or candidate;
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
- Part I - fellows spend three months at a UN Global Compact office - including the New York head office and the more than 80 local network offices worldwide, with the objective to gain better awareness of the Global Compact’s principles and its work toward facilitating and encouraging corporate social responsibility.
- Part II – fellows are placed with a corporation supporting the program – acting in a supportive capacity, as emissaries between organizations, and ensuring that their presence and participation is demand driven by the needs of the corporation. Possible areas of overlap between the Global Compact, business need and academic relevance might include:
Critical case studies that determine and disseminate good practice
Developing the Business Case for CSR
Incorporating environmental, social and governance factors into Risk Analysis
The relationship between CSR and transaction costs in a globalized economy
Analysis on how companies can extricate themselves from the Prisoners Dilemma
How CSR initiatives can lead to improvement in the production of public goods and global governance
The role of business in meeting the Millennium Development Goals
Part III – fellows spend the last three months at a partner university – the academic research paper should focus on the issue area pursued during the corporate internship. Currently, the program’s partner universities are:
- SIPA at Columbia University, New York;
- JFK School at Harvard University;
- London School of Economics;
- Institut d’Études Politiques, Paris.

Fellowship Areas of Focus
Potential fellows will be required to submit a short brief outlining their interest / general familiarity with the work of the Global Compact, and in particular one of the 10 issue areas.
The goal of the Kofi Annan Fellowship in Global Governance is to advance research and provide a conduit toward creating awareness by engaging the various sectors of society in finding solutions to promote a program of corporate social responsibility sustainable for decades to come.
Fellows applying for admission to the program are encouraged to identify, prior to submitting their application, an area of interest within the ten principles of the Global Compact www.unglobalcompact.org.
